Project description and method
Literature review
After the literature review and the search for the national guidelines which are available online, we need more information about the EU states’ practice about dental screening and policies. My pilot study showed a big variety among the member states’ guidelines, indicating a need for deeper analysis.
Dental caries: Patent analysis
The current EU Health Strategy supports and sets development of new technologies as a priority since new technologies can contribute to the efficiency and sustainability of health systems. We provide a patent landscape analysis to detect patterns of innovation in the area of caries research. Patent analysis is a well-established method for studying development in a particular research area. To understand the technology focus, patents were grouped under three concepts: prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
The research is based on a survey to discover the preventive dental treatments, guidelines and policies. I am collecting national guidelines on childhood caries from the member states of the European Union, and data on the national caries prevention policies and financing of paediatric dentistry in the member states of the European Union.
The research work entails collection of data on public dental healthcare systems and policies related to childhood caries prevention in the member states of the European Union.
This study has a unique value, and no similar comparative assessments have been
performed in this field.

Analysis
Part 1.
We use the process and outcome indicators recommended by the OECD and WHO. The collection of professional protocols and guidelines, policies and regulations of the European Union member states are the core of the work. The guidelines/recommendations will be analised according to the AGREE II. instrument. Such an analysis could contribute to the development of good practices and the identification of the best models of policies. My aim is the appraisal of national guidelines with the AGREE II. instrument by assessing their transparency and methodological quality.
Part 2.
As a part of my research project I will collect data on childhood caries prevention policies and practice in the member states of the Europen Union. This unique survey will provide reliable and comparable data on this topic.
